This was much better than the first book. That’s saying something because I loved the first one! This book was just so much more enticing. There was a lot more happening and the story was just so much more.
I felt closer to the characters. They were somehow more real to me. I felt like I knew them better because the author really made me see how they thought, what they felt, and who they really are.
The romance really was not the main focus of the book, but I could still feel it. I felt that a lot of the decisions and actions the characters did were for love.
Kestrel had to make such hard decisions to save people. These decisions may have made her look ruthless, but those decisions were made to save more people.
Kestrel is incredibly intelligent and compassionate as well, but that does not mean she doesn’t have flaws. There were some decisions she made that I did not really agree with even though it was kind of necessary.
She was able to outwit so many people and I loved reading about how she was able to accomplish it.
What did I not like about this book? Well it’s not a matter of what, but who. Jess. I hate her oh my gosh couldn’t she have just died from being poisoned?!
Okay I get that the Herrani killed Valorians and Jess is angry about that boo hoo; but she has to remember that the Valorians took their land and enslaved them so she has no right to be angry when it happens to her people, her friends, and herself! Serves them right. What a hypocrite! She’s also very angry with Kestrel for not marrying her brother and becoming her sister. Well sorry Jess if Kestrel’s not falling all over herself to become your brother’s bride and your sister. I mean look how you treated her.
The ending. It was cruel.
